Stairs Before and After!

(BEFORE: The builders tried to pass off underlay as actual carpet. Walking on it was an itchy mess)

(AFTER: Pretty white stairs, pretty white walls, pretty Bindweed wallpaper!)

A few days ago I finally finished my staircase. I started this project back in February, but due to things going horribly wrong in the paint & varnish department and just general photography-related busyness, I wasn't able to get it right till now. It was totally worth the wait, though, because it's the first project in our house that turned out exactly how I envisioned it. Walking up those stairs each morning to the kitchen is an absolute treat. And the best part is that we have loads of wallpaper left and I'm already planning my next attack on the house with it!

Thank you! I've kind of been noticing that white is a bit harder to take care of, but so totally worth it.

They look so fresh and cool - just in time for summer too. And its even more amazing that you have such a nice landlord that lets you try out your fabulous design ideas.

fantastic, although it's fair to say that your super tiling in the bathroom makes this look like chopped liver!

I agree with Alan, just came across these pics - wow - this is exactly what I want to do with my stairs which are WAY too dark at the moment... tell me howwwwwww (please)?

If you have wood stairs that aren't varnished, it's easy as pie :-)

Just carefully measured panels of wallpaper and wallpaper paste is all you need! If any of you want to send me photos of your finished stairs, I'd love to see them!

I was in the middle of redoing my stairs when I ran across your pictures. They are beautiful!
I have found some decorative paper and I am going to modge podge or varnish it to the risers. I'll send you pictures when I am done.

Shawna I love these stairs. I am desperate to do the same at number four but would like to know which varnish you used over the paper please? BTW loved your house on Letc site too.

Thanks Helen! I actually did not use any varnish on top of the wallpaper. I just papered the stairs like you would with any wall really; a bit of paste to the back of the paper and up it goes!

Also, Helen do you think you could send me a link to that Letc page? I cant find it anywhere on their site...

I love your stairs and I am in the process of doing the same in my house. What paint did you use for the stairs??

Shawna said...

To be honest, it was Woody's own brand white gloss paint. I know you're not meant to use gloss paint on the floor, but it's really not that slick at all. However, I must warn you that painting your stairs white requires quite a lot of maintenance, as they get so much foot traffic on them.
